Expansion of Cycling Infrastructure in Moscow

Moscow authorities are set to expand the city's cycling infrastructure, adding 35 kilometers of temporary bike lanes and paths across 26 districts, providing access to more than 2.7 million residents.

The deputy mayor of Moscow, Maxim Liksutov, announced the plans, stating that bicycles and scooters are popular modes of transport in the city, and it is necessary to increase the dedicated infrastructure for safe trips. This initiative aligns with the goals set by Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, with the total length of bike lanes expected to reach 590 kilometers this year.

Moscow residents will benefit from the improved infrastructure, saving time during their commutes. For example, a bike lane in Gol'yanovo will connect the area between the Moscow Ring Road and Losiny Ostrov with the "Shchyolkovskaya" metro station. This journey can be completed in just 15 minutes by bike, which is twice as fast as taking the bus and 2.5 times faster than walking.

Another bike lane will be created along Shipilovskiy Proyezd, spanning six kilometers. It will connect the MCC-2 Moskvorechye and Tsaritsyno stations with the "Orekhovo" metro station and a shopping center.

The development of cycling infrastructure in Moscow has been accelerating. Last year, the city had approximately 512 kilometers of bike lanes and paths, two-thirds more than in 2020. The network of bike lanes is being expanded in the central part of the city, where there are many points of attraction and higher density of movement, as well as in other districts, gradually covering new areas. Temporary bike lanes are introduced each season, allowing for quicker and safer routes for cyclists and scooter riders. Additionally, slower-speed zones with a speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour are being implemented on secondary and intra-district streets.

Ensuring the safety of cyclists is a top priority. Specialists from the Moscow Center for Traffic Organization are analyzing the solutions implemented in previous years, expanding bike lanes and paths, connecting them for continuity, marking trajectories at intersections, installing traffic lights, and navigation signs.

Furthermore, in 2024, the Moscow Center for Traffic Organization will continue developing the "Green Ring" cycling route, introducing new signs, markings, navigation signs, and bike racks. The city will also refresh the markings on 60 kilometers of bike lanes and install new bike traffic lights.
